The author tells the story of her mother, Lotte, a Jewish woman who was able to escape Germany as a young bride shortly before World War II, and whose reluctance to talk about her past was eased when her three girlfriends, all German women, sent her a package full of personal documents, photographs, and other keepsakes they had risked their own safety to preserve for Lotte.
